The Daily Nole — April 7, 2019: Offenses Shine in FSU Spring Game

Lead Story

The highly-anticipated debut of Willie Taggart’s new offensive coaches in coordinator Kendal Briles, receivers coach Ron Dugans and offensive line coach Randy Clements didn’t disappoint during Saturday’s spring game as the Gold topped the Garnet, 27-21.

Between the two teams, the offenses combined for 923 yards. James Blackman highlighted the Gold’s day with 415 yards passing and three touchdowns. As a team, the Gold averaged 7.2 yards per play to 5.4 for the Garnet.

Among receivers, both D.J. Matthews and Keyshawn Helton finished with more than 100 yards receiving. Six different players scored a touchdown in Saturday’s spring game.

While the numbers were impressive offensively, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. The teams did combine to give up nine sacks and neither team rushed for more than 2.5 yards per carry.

Between the Lines

FSU beach volleyball finished the FSU Beach Bash with a 4-1 win over Georgia State on Saturday. FSU men’s golf began the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate. FSU softball split a doubleheader with Louisville. FSU baseball fell to Miami on Saturday night in Coral Gables, 4-0.

On the Agenda

FSU men’s golf wraps up the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate on Sunday while the women begin the Clemson Invitational. FSU men’s tennis will take on Florida A&M and Virginia Tech while the women travel to NC State. FSU baseball wraps up its 3-game series at Miami at 1 p.m. EST on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

Virginia and Texas Tech will play for college basketball’s national championship.

Shane Drohan will start for FSU on Sunday against Miami.

FSU baseball topped Miami on Sunday in Coral Gables, 6-5.
