The Daily Nole — June 20, 2018: Akers, Taylor Named Preseason All-Americans by Athlon

Lead Story

The start of the 2018 season is less than three weeks away, but on Tuesday, a couple Florida State players received some recognition from a prominent college football publication.

Athlon Sports listed both running back Cam Akers and cornerback Levonta Taylor as fourth-team All-Americans on its annual preseason teams. Akers, a sophomore, broke Dalvin Cook’s FSU freshman rushing record last season, going for 1,024 yards and eight total touchdowns.

Taylor, a junior cornerback, was a lockdown defender last season, recording 18 tackles, including one for loss and two interceptions — one of which he returned for a touchdown. The Seminoles open the season on Labor Day, Sept. 3 at home against Virginia Tech.

News and Notes

Florida State’s Cortney Jones and Jayla Kirkland will represent Team USA at the IAAF World U20 Championships next month in Finland.

FSU hoops will open the 2018-19 season at home against rival Florida.

FSU received a commitment from 4-star defensive end Derick Hunter on Wednesday.
