The Daily Nole — Feb. 26, 2017: FSU Women Battle Notre Dame for ACC’s Top Seed

It’s Sunday, Florida State fans. It looks to be a big day in FSU athletics and we’ll keep you up on the latest by updating the news and notes section.

Lead Story

The battle for the top seed in the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament has come down to one game as No. 5 Notre Dame (26-3, 14-1 ACC) plays host to No. 8 Florida State (25-4, 13-2 ACC).

After a bit of a rough patch late in the season, FSU has bounced back with consecutive blowouts of Clemson and Pittsburgh. Leading scorer Shakayla Thomas is expected to play after missing time with a shoulder injury. The Seminoles have been led by a balanced attack this season with six different players averaging at least 8.9 points per game.

The Fighting Irish have a 3-headed monster to deal with, headlined by leading scorer and rebounder, Brianna Turner. Arike Ogunbowale and Marina Mabrey each average better than 14 points per game.

Notre Dame has won all five match-ups since joining the ACC. Saturday’s contest begins at 1 p.m. EST and will air on ESPN2.

Between the Lines

Both the FSU men and women finished third at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which wrapped up on Saturday. FSU’s men’s team defeated Clemson on the hardwood, 76-74. FSU baseball clinched a second straight weekend series by shutting out Samford, 8-0 on Saturday. FSU softball defeated Arizona 1-0 in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

On the Agenda

In addition to women’s basketball, FSU beach volleyball will play the garnet and gold match. The FSU men’s golf team will be in Mexico for the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. FSU women’s tennis will visit Georgia Tech. FSU baseball will go for the sweep of Samford in contest that airs on ACC Network Extra at 1 p.m. EST. Also at the time and network, FSU men’s tennis hosts Texas A&M. FSU softball wraps up the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with contests against UCLA and Michigan.

News and Notes

The Regional Opening in Miami gets underway on Sunday.

FSU baseball completed the 3-game sweep of Samford on Sunday with a 13-4 victory.

FSU women’s hoops fell at Notre Dame, 79-61 and will be the No. 2 seed in the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament.
