Florida State clinched the weekend series over Samford with an 8-0 shutout victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Sophomore Tyler Holton led the way, dominating over seven innings while senior Quincy Nieporte went 2-for-5 at the plate with a grand slam.

The Good: Holton and Jim Voyles combined to throw a 5-hit shutout on Saturday against the Samford Bulldogs. The two arms struck out a combined 13 batters and only walked three.

The Bad: It’s usually not one individual play that fills the bad category, but Samford intentionally walking Rhett Aplin to load the bases for Nieporte backfired in the worst way possible. Nieporte crushed a 1-0 fastball over the opponent’s bullpen in left field to blow open a 1-0 game and give them Seminoles a 5-0 advantage.

The Ugly: The Bulldogs’ offense was shut down yet again in the second game of the 3-game series. Kevin Williams Jr., who homered twice on Friday night, went 2-for-4 at the dish, but he was once again the lone bright spot. Just three other Samford hitters registered a hit on the afternoon.

Studs of the Game: Tyler Holton improved to 2-0 on the season, turning in yet another quality start. The sophomore went seven innings, only surrendering two hits and three walks while striking out career-high 11 Bulldogs. Nieporte’s five RBIs powered the FSU offense.

Duds of the Game: For the second consecutive night, a Samford starter struggled to get anything going. Mikhail Cazenave was strong out of the gate, but ran into trouble in the fifth inning. Dylan Busby and Taylor Walls both walked, Cal Raleigh doubled to right field, and Cazenave walked Aplin to load the bases for Nieporte, who connected on a moon-shot to unload the bases.

Extra Innings: In six games, Florida State starting pitching has combined to throw 36.1 innings, striking out 41 batters, surrendering five earned runs, and only walking eight opposing batters.
