Florida State completed the weekend sweep over the Samford Bulldogs on Sunday, hammering eight hits and putting up 13 runs on the board. Drew Parrish saw his first action as a starter and excelled, while the FSU batting lineup repeatedly found success against the Bulldog pitchers.

The Good: In his first ever start at pitcher, Florida State’s Drew Parrish threw a fantastic game. By the end of the afternoon, Parrish allowed only two hits and one earned run to go along with six strikeouts. He totaled six innings and 69 total pitches. A larger sample size is needed, but head coach Mike Martin’s decision making seems to have paid off in the pitching change.

The Bad: Samford’s second inning where it gave up five runs put all of the momentum to Florida State’s side. In addition to the three hits allowed, the Bulldogs committed two errors in the inning. The first allowed runners to advance to second and third base on a failed pick off attempt. The second put Jackson Lueck on third base after batting in three runs. Five runs later, and Samford was already out of the game.

The Ugly: Pitching for Samford was a wild ride the whole contest. Starting pitching Stephen Jones only lasted 3.2 innings, and by the time he was pulled, it was a 7-0 FSU lead. The next six innings witnesses six different Samford players get a shot on the mound. Only one lasted more than a third of an inning. They combined to give up an astounding 12 earned runs on the afternoon.

Studs of the Game: Drew Parrish gets a nod for his aforementioned start. Cal Raleigh contributed two hits, two RBIs, and one run in five at-bats. J.C. Flowers was also productive with two hits, two RBIs, and three runs.

Duds of the Game: Stephen Jones had a rough day for Samford. He allowed five hits and seven earned runs in a little over three inning. Erin Baldwin only pitched for 1/3 of an inning and he gave up four earned runs, while not even tallying one strikeout.

Extra Innings: Did anyone else realize that it was “Barq’s Root Beer” and not “Bang’s Root Beer”? Because I grabbed one from the press fridge and started drinking it, and realized that the “n” was an “r” and the “g” was actually a “q”. How did I go 20 years of my life not knowing that?
