The Daily Nole — July 12, 2021: FSU’s Nelson Selected by Reds in MLB Draft

After an outstanding season at Florida State, catcher Matheu Nelson is now property of the Cincinnati Reds. Nelson went 35th overall in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday night.

The winner of the Buster Posey Award as the nation’s best catcher, Nelson led the Seminoles last season with a .330 batting average, 23 home runs and 66 RBIs. Nelson became the first FSU player to hit 20 home runs in a season since Buster Posey in 2008.

Nelson is set to earn more than $2 million with his signing bonus. He is the highest FSU player selected since DJ Stewart went 25th overall to the Baltimore Orioles in 2015. The MLB Draft will continue on Monday.
