The Daily Nole — March 3, 2019: FSU Softball Opens UCF Invitational with Two Wins

Lead Story

No. 1 Florida State softball opened the UCF Invitational on Saturday with a pair of wins, but not without some drama. The Seminoles squeaked by Toledo on a walk-off win to open the day before blanking Louisiana Tech, 4-0.

FSU opened the day with a 5-4 win over Toledo as Anna Shelnutt played the role of hero with a walk-off RBI double to score Sydney Sherrill in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shelnutt finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the win. Brittney Davis had two RBIs for the Rockets while Morgan Paaverud homered in the loss.

In the second game, the Seminoles and Bulldogs were scoreless until the fifth when Dani Morgan delivered an RBI single to score Zoe Casas. The Seminoles added three runs in the sixth on an RBI hit from Casas and a 2-run single from Morgan, who was 3-for-3. Meghan King threw a 3-hit shutout to pick up the win.

With the victories, FSU improved to 18-0 on the season and extended its winning streak to 25 games. The Seminoles wrap up the UCF Invitational on Sunday with games against Dartmouth and UCF.

Between the Lines

In addition to FSU softball, FSU beach volleyball continued the FAU Beach Burrow Bash with 4-1 wins over South Carolina and Florida Atlantic on Saturday. FSU basketball defeated NC State 78-73 at the Donald L. Tucker Center. FSU men’s swimming and diving finished fifth in the ACC Championships. FSU baseball blasted Mercer, 12-1.

On the Agenda

In addition to FSU softball, FSU women’s basketball wraps up the regular season at Georgia Tech at 1 p.m. EST on ACC Network Extra. FSU women’s tennis will be at Pittsburgh while the men visit Oklahoma. FSU baseball wraps up its series with Mercer at 1 p.m. EST on ACC Network Extra. FSU men’s golf begins the Querencia Cabo Collegiate.

News and Notes

FSU hoops is currently tied for fourth in the ACC standings.

FSU baseball completed a 3-game sweep of Mercer with a 5-1 win on Sunday.
