The Daily Nole — June 17, 2017: FSU Opens CWS vs. LSU

It’s the weekend, Florida State fans. Keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics as the news and notes section is updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

For the first time in five years, Florida State will take the field in Omaha for the College World Series. The Seminoles will be taking on LSU, who swept through the SEC Tournament and regional and super regional rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

The pitching match-up is a good one as Tyler Holton goes for the Seminoles against LSU’s Alex Lange, who is 9-5 with a 2.92 ERA on the year. Holton did struggle his last time out, but the All-American sophomore lefty has been nothing shy of outstanding for FSU this season.

Offensively, Greg Deichmann is the name to watch for LSU. Deichmann is hitting .320 with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs. For FSU, the top half of the order is on a tear recently. Taylor Walls successfully reached base in each of his seven plate appearances last time out and leads the team with 78 runs scored. Jackson Lueck’s .327 batting average is a team-best while Dylan Busby and Quincy Nieporte lead the team in home runs and RBIs, with 14 and 78 respectively.

Saturday’s contest in Omaha begins at 8 p.m. EST and airs on ESPN.
