Florida State will be in a familiar situation — facing elimination. The Seminoles blew a late lead in the opening round of the College World Series in Omaha on Saturday night in a 5-4 loss to LSU.

The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the eighth to overtake FSU and advance to the winners’ bracket to face No. 1 Oregon State. The Seminoles will try to stave off elimination on Monday against Cal State Fullerton.

The Good: Both starting pitchers managed to eat a decent amount of innings. Tyler Holton went 7 1/3 innings for Florida State despite taking loss. LSU starter Alex Lange was also without his best stuff, but lasted six innings.

The Bad: For FSU, it had trouble putting the ball in play. 11 of the 27 outs made by the Seminoles came by way of strikeout.

The Ugly: A trip to Omaha didn’t stop Florida State from giving away outs and runs. LSU scored its first run on a strikeout that got away from catcher Cal Raleigh as Antoine Duplantis scored all the way from first, because no one was covering home plate. The tying run for the Tigers scored on a throw home that was dropped by Raleigh in the eighth inning when Cole Freeman looked to be gunned at the plate.

Studs of the Game: Antoine Duplantis was 2-for-3 for LSU with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Michael Papierski was 2-for-3 with a solo home run. For FSU, Dylan Busby was 2-for-5 with a 2-run home run and three RBIs. Taylor Walls scored three runs for the Seminoles in the loss. Matt Henderson was 2-for-3 with a walk in the loss.

Duds of the Game: Steven Wells, Jr. was 0-for-3 with a strikeout for FSU in the loss. For LSU, Kramer Robertson and Zach Watson were each 0-for-4 with three combined strikeouts.
