FSU Football: Five Candidates For Attrition

Florida State now sits only one scholarship over the limit for 2017.

The latest attrition came in the form of redshirt senior Jeremy Kerr, who received a medical hardship after undergoing shoulder surgery in the offseason. Last week, The Daily Nole was the first to report that linebacker Sh’Mar Kilby-Lane was no longer with the team. The loss of defensive end Keith Bryant was reported one day prior.

As it currently sits, Florida State has just 86 scholarship players on the roster. Prior to the start of the season, there are a handful of players who could leave the program to try and find more playing time or for other reasons. Here are five:

Ethan Frith, T
Ethan Frith was expected to fight for a starting spot at tackle this spring, but those two jobs no longer seem to be trending in Frith’s favor. Redshirt freshman Josh Ball has become the favorite at left tackle while Brock Ruble and Rick Leonard are expected to battle for the right tackle position. A junior, Frith has seen little playing time during his first two years in Tallahassee. In addition to the names mentioned, Jauan Williams and Derrick Kelly are two other players fighting to fill that void.

Ryan Green, RB
Despite the loss of all-time leading rusher Dalvin Cook, the chances of redshirt senior Ryan Green getting onto the field as a running back seem slim. If Green were willing to move to wide receiver, it’s possible he could make a case for playing time, but with Jacques Patrick, Cam Akers, Amir Rasul and Khalan Laborn all on the roster, Green will probably be relegated to mop-up duty as a back.

Delvin Purifoy, LB
The Seminoles recently lost a linebacker with the subtraction of Kilby-Lane, but the stars are hardly aligned for Delvin Purifoy to make a major impact. Now a redshirt junior, Purifoy has not played a meaningful down for FSU. Seniors Matthew Thomas, Jacob Pugh and Ro’Derrick Hoskins are expected to start, but behind them, youngsters like Dontavious Jackson, Josh Brown and Emmett Rice have already made a stronger case.

Adam Torres, DE
A redshirt junior, Adam Torres has yet to register a statistic during his time at Florida State. Unfortunately for Torres, that doesn’t look to be changing soon. Although Bryant is no longer with the team, the Seminoles are loaded with a mixture of proven and young talent that includes Josh Sweat, Brian Burns, Janarius Robinson and Joshua Kaindoh. All of those players are younger than Torres.

Arthur Williams, DT
Defensive tackle Arthur Williams is another redshirt junior that has yet to make a real meaningful impact. Williams has six career tackles, including one for loss, but mostly in garbage time. On the roster in front of Williams are Derrick Nnadi, Demarcus Christmas, Fred Jones, Wally Aime and likely come the fall, Marvin Wilson.
