As the weekend draws nearer, check out our daily rundown.

Lead Story

For the first time during the NCAA Tournament, Florida State softball found itself on the losing end on Thursday night. The 10th-seeded Seminoles kicked off the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City with a 4-0 loss to No. 2 seed UCLA.

The contest was scoreless for 4 1/2 innings before Kinsley Washington came around to score from second on an infield single from Anna Vines in the bottom of the fifth. Delanie Wisz added an RBI double in the sixth before Maya Brady’s 2-run home run put the contest out of reach.

FSU managed just five hits in the loss. Washington and Vines each had two hits for the Bruins. Rachel Garcia struck out 11 hitters for UCLA in the victory.

With the loss, FSU now faces elimination and will need to win four straight games to advance to the championship series. The Seminoles will face No. 11 national seed Arizona on Saturday.
