Lead Story

Florida State baseball didn’t get off to the best start on Friday, but it finished strong. The Seminoles opened the NCAA Tournament with a 5-2 win over Southern Mississippi in Oxford, Miss.

The Golden Eagles pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the first, but FSU finally drew even in the top of the sixth with a 2-run home run from Logan Lacey. Elijah Cabell added a solo home run later in the inning to put FSU ahead for good. The Seminoles got some insurance in the eighth with a 2-run blast from catcher Mat Nelson.

Starting pitcher Parker Messick allowed just the two unearned runs on seven hits in six innings to pick up the win. Lacey and Cabell each had two hits in the victory.

With the victory, FSU improves to 31-22 and moves into the winners’ bracket of the Oxford Regional. The Seminoles will take on host and No. 12 national seed Ole Miss on Saturday night. The contest begins at 6 p.m. ET and airs on ESPN2.
