Column: TDN is Making Changes and We Want Your Input

First off, let’s say congratulations to Florida State’s beach volleyball team for winning its fourth straight CCSA Tournament title on Sunday with shutout victories over Georgia State and LSU.

Secondly, you may have noticed on Easter Sunday, but it was the first time in more than 1,100 days since The Daily Nole’s inception that we did not have a single article posted. While we at TDN are not folding, I do expect that structural changes will be coming.

We’ve appreciated all of the support from readers and all the feedback we’ve received over the last 3-plus years. Moving forward however, I do expect that The Daily Nole may become less “daily” in terms of the way operations have run for the majority of our existence.

Since our creation in 2016, we’ve recapped every football, men’s basketball and baseball game — often with a press credential. We’ve also recapped every ACC and NCAA Tournament contest for each of Florida State’s 20 varsity sports. We’ve reported or aggregated every FSU football and men’s basketball commitment and decommitment. We’ve also previewed every FSU football and men’s basketball contest.

With a staff of only two people with one being a recent college graduate just breaking into his field in Tennessee, we’ve decided to slow things down a bit. Personally, I’m going to dedicate more time my kids and my family moving forward — especially on the weekend.

We’re not completely sure what the model for The Daily Nole will look like moving forward, but expect to see less breaking news, recaps and previews. I’m certainly open to suggestions from readers, followers and potential readers. You can email me at Mike@TheDailyNole.com.

Although changes are coming, I am proud of the work we’ve done at The Daily Nole over the last three years. We’ve had the most comprehensive coverage for non-revenue sports of any FSU publication on the web outside of the university’s official athletic site.

Over that time, we’ve also spoken to about 40 current and former Florida State athletes and commitments, which I anticipate will be a trend that picks up in the coming years. Last summer, we completed a 12-part series commemorating the 25th anniversary of FSU’s 1993 national title team with interviews from five starters on the team, including four players who achieved All-American status during their time in Tallahassee.

We’ve recognized a number of great things that former Seminoles have done after their playing days and will continue to do that as well. While we weren’t widely given credit for it, we were also the first to report on the football departures of Wilson Bell and Sh’Mar Kilby-Lane among other topics.

To reiterate, we are not closing up shop, but just undergoing structural changes, which will probably become more clear in the summer months. Throughout this process, we’ll regularly be looking for feedback from readers and potential readers to inquire about what they would like to see that separates us from other FSU publications, which tend to all do outstanding work. Articles will also continue to be written and posted — just not with the regularity that many have grown accustomed to.

Personally, I’ll be open to other worthwhile opportunities if anyone has an interest. I look forward to your feedback and we thank you for all of your support.

Sincerely,
Mike Ferguson
