4-Star Safety Raymond Woodie III Commits to Florida State

A familiar name popped up on Wednesday afternoon. 4-star safety Raymond Woodie III committed to Florida State, adding yet another piece to a loaded secondary class.

The obvious connection is that Woodie III is the son of current FSU linebackers coach Raymond Woodie Jr., and many penciled in the son as an eventual FSU commit. While that turned out true, it was not a foregone conclusion.

Woodie III received interest from other Power 5 programs like Louisville, California, and Arkansas, and it was communicated early in the process that he would have an open recruitment. He took an official visit to Florida State in the past weekend, and it seems that visit decided things for him.

We said this in a previous recruiting article and it still applies:

It’s not clear where Woodie III would line up on defense for FSU, but his measurables and tape point towards the STAR position as a hybrid linebacker/safety. He is a raw prospect that can be molded into whatever a team needs him to be. Hence why some of his rankings are all over the place. Woodie III is not a take based on his family name — he is a take because he is a legitimately good football player.

The athleticism is obvious when watching Woodie III. The speed, strength, and acceleration all look starter-level, but his true position is a bit in the air. It would be surprising if he contributed early.

Woodie III is ranked as the No. 27 safety and No. 317 player overall in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He keeps Florida State’s 2019 class ranking at 10th nationally and second in the ACC, per th 247Sports Composite.

He is the fifth secondary commit and third safety commit. In addition with 3-star cornerback Jarvis Brownlee, this commitment rounds out the secondary.
