Happy hump day, Florida State fans. It’s that slow time of year, but we’ll do our best to keep you up on the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

After reaching the College World Series for the first time in five years this past season, Florida State hopes to return to Omaha in 2018. To get there, the Seminoles will have to do so with a new closer and shortstop.

According to reports, junior shortstop Taylor Walls and closer Drew Carlton each decided to forego their senior seasons and sign with the Major League Baseball team who selected them.

Walls was taken 79th overall in the third round by the Tampa Bay Rays. This past season, Walls hit .273 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs on top of scoring 82 runs. Despite the dip in average, Walls posted a .421 on-base percentage and drew a team-high 67 walks.

Carlton will sign with the Detroit Tigers who selected him in the 32nd round and 965th overall. After being Florida State’s Opening Day starter against Virginia Commonwealth, Carlton was moved to closer to help heal a struggling bullpen. Carlton finished the 2017 season with a 5-4 record and a 2.17 ERA with a team-high seven saves.
