The Daily Nole — June 14, 2017: Holton to Start for FSU in CWS Opener

Happy hump day, Florida State fans. It’s becoming that slow time of year for FSU athletics, but we’ll have the latest right here. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State hasn’t won to open the College World Series since 1999, but looks for that to change against No. 4 national seed LSU on Saturday.

The Seminoles will be handing the ball to ace Tyler Holton to try to start things on the right foot. For the year, Holton is 10-2 with a 2.25 ERA and 139 strikeouts in 112 innings.

He’ll have stiff competition on Saturday night as Alex Lange goes for the Tigers. Lange is 9-5 this season with a 2.92 ERA.

Drew Parrish will pitch the second game of the College World Series for the Seminoles against either Oregon State or Cal State Fullerton. Parrish is 6-3 with a 4.40 ERA this season, but has been lights out since the end of the regular season.

News and Notes

The Major League Baseball Draft concludes on Wednesday with rounds 11-40.

Outfielder Rhett Aplin could be available to pinch-hit for FSU during the College World Series.

The first of FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher’s two football camps starts on Wednesday.

FSU designated hitter Quincy Nieporte was selected 773rd overall by the Philadelphia Phillies.

FSU pitcher Cobi Johnson was taken 865th overall by the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.

FSU pitcherAndrew Karp was selected in the 34th round by the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.

Jim Voyles was the ninth and final FSU player selected during the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft.

Tyler Holton was selected in the 35th round by the Miami Marlins during Wednesday’s draft. Holton was also named a third-team All-American by NCBWA.

FSU left-handed reliever Alec Byrd was a 33rd round pick of the Colorado Rockies.

Seminoles’ closer Drew Carlton was selected in the 32nd round by the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

3-star safety Johnathan Huggins committed to Florida State on Wednesday evening. In a report however, FSU said Huggins is not considered a commitment at this time.

3-star wide receiver D’Marcus Adams committed to FSU on Wednesday night.
