The Daily Nole — June 10, 2017: FSU Opens Super Regional vs. Bearkats

It’s the weekend, Florida State fans. Before you sit down and enjoy the Tallahassee Super Regional, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

The long wait is finally over. Florida State and Sam Houston State will kick off the Tallahassee Super Regional at Dick Howser Stadium.

Both teams will be throwing their aces in the first game of the best-of-three Super Regional. Tyler Holton takes his 10-2 record and 2.22 ERA to the mound against Sam Houston State’s Heath Donica, who is 9-2 this season with a 1.91 ERA.

Dylan Busby leads the FSU offense with a .317 batting average and 14 home runs. Jackson Lueck and Quincy Nieporte are also two players to watch. Sam Houston State is loaded from top to bottom of the order, but the standout is outfielder Bryce Johnson. Johnson is hitting .350 with 62 runs scored and 33 stolen bases. Andrew Fregia’s seven home runs and 47 RBIs are both team-highs for the Bearkats.

Saturday’s contest gets underway at noon EST and will air on ESPN2.

Between the Lines

FSU’s men’s track and field team finished 51st at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon on Friday. The women are currently in 22nd place.

On the Agenda

In addition to baseball, FSU’s women track and field team will wrap up the NCAA Championships on Saturday.

News and Notes

Florida won the men’s track and field national championship. Oregon won on the women’s side.

Jackson Lueck’s walk-off single gave Florida State a 7-6 victory over Sam Houston State in the Tallahassee Super Regional opener.

12 of the 16 FSU track athletes to make the NCAA Championships earned All-American honors, including five first-team selections. As a team, the FSU men finished 51st. The women finished 19th.
