The Daily Nole — June 2, 2017: FSU Opens NCAA Tournament vs. Tennessee Tech

Happy Friday, Florida State fans. For those of you winding down your work week, we’ll try to help get you to the weekend. Keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics as the news and notes section will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State will look to extend its streak of consecutive seasons with at least 40 wins to 40 on Friday night as it kicks off the Tallahassee Regional against fourth-seeded Tennessee Tech.

The Golden Eagles are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009 after beating Belmont in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. Tennessee Tech is an offensive juggernaut that leads the nation in home runs with 97.

Trevor Putzig and Ryan Flick are the two guys to watch for that offense. Putzig is a machine when it comes to getting on base while Flick supplies the power. Despite leading the Ohio Valley in ERA, the Golden Eagles are not a great pitching team. Michael Wood will take his 8-4 record and 5.34 ERA to the mound on Friday night.

Starting for Florida State will be freshman lefty Drew Parrish, who was nothing short of outstanding during the ACC Tournament. The Seminoles won that tournament and come in winners of six straight and 12 of 14 overall. Offensively, the trio of Dylan Busby, Jackson Lueck and Quincy Nieporte have powered FSU for much of the season.

The winner of Friday’s contest will move on to face the winner of UCF and Auburn. The loser will face the loser of that game in an elimination contest. The Seminoles and Golden Eagles will play at 6 p.m. EST in a contest that airs on ESPN3.
