It’s the weekend, Florida State fans. We’ll do our best to catch you up on the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State is less than a week away from starting the 2017 season, but that season will start without a talented youngster who was expected to play every day for the Seminoles.

FSU freshman infielder Drew Mendoza will miss 4-8 weeks to open the season with a broken thumb. Mendoza is scheduled to have surgery on Monday.

A native of Minneola, Mendoza was one of the top high school prospects in the country and told prospective Major League Baseball teams that it would take a large signing bonus to lure him away from Tallahassee. Mendoza was expected to start either at first or third base, depending on where head coach Mike Martin and company preferred to put Dylan Busby.

Between the Lines

FSU softball opened the year with two victories, beating Lipscomb 12-1 and Furman, 5-1. FSU women’s golf is currently in second place at the Florida State Match-Up. The FSU track and field teams had meets in Arkansas and Boston.

On the Agenda

FSU women’s golf will continue the Florida State Match-Up on Saturday. The FSU men’s tennis team will host George Washington and then College of Charleston. FSU softball will continue the Unconquered Invitational against Marshall and another opponent. The FSU men’s basketball team will visit Notre Dame at 6 p.m. EST. That contest airs on ESPN.

The NCAA Selection Committee awarded FSU a No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region at the release of its top 16 teams.

Saturday is FSU baseball fan day.

No. 14 Florida State was handled by Notre Dame on Saturday night, 84-72. Bonzie Colson scored 33 points to lead the Fighting Irish.
