The Daily Nole — Dec. 4, 2021: FSU Soccer Tops Rutgers to Reach National Title Match

Lead Story

For the second straight season, Florida State soccer will play for a national championship. The Seminoles clinched their spot in Santa Clara on Friday night in a matchup of No. 1 seeds with a 1-0 win over Rutgers.

The match’s lone goal came in the 71st minute from Jaelin Howell off a corner kick. Rutgers had multiple chances, but FSU goalkeeper Cristina Roque came up huge with four saves, including two difficult ones with about 13 minutes left.

Both teams finished with nine shots. FSU will face BYU in the title game on Monday night. The Cougars beat reigning national champion Santa Clara on penalty kicks to advance.

Between the Lines

In addition to FSU’s soccer victory, FSU track and field began its season on Friday with the Clemson Opener. FSU volleyball kept its season alive with a 3-0 win over Kansas State to begin the NCAA Tournament.

On the Agenda

FSU track and field will participate in the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday. FSU hoops opens ACC play at home against Syracuse. That contest begins at 4 p.m. ET and airs on ACC Network. FSU volleyball will try to keep its season alive as it faces Nebraska in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It begins at 8 p.m. ET and streams on ESPN+.

FSU hoops is listed as an 8.5-point favorite over Syracuse.

FSU football linebacker DeCalon Brooks will leave the program and prepare for the NFL Draft.
