Seminole Sunday Summary: FSU’s Mat Nelson Wins Posey Award

Florida State athletics

The college baseball award named after a Florida State great is heading back to Tallahassee for the first time since the award’s namesake won it.

Florida State catcher Matheu Nelson was named the winner of the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award on Thursday night.

Nelson enjoyed a monster year for the Seminoles, posting a .330 batting average with 23 home runs and 66 RBIs. Nelson led the country in both of those statistics for a large portion of the year.

This past season, Nelson became the first FSU player to hit 20 home runs since Posey himself in 2008. Nelson was also named ACC Player of the Year.

Previously the Johnny Bench Award, Nelson joined Posey as the only Seminoles to take home the honor. Now the catcher for Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants, Posey won the honor in 2008, along with the Golden Spikes Award.
