The Daily Nole — June 9, 2021: FSU Softball Tops Oklahoma, One Win From Title

Lead Story

Florida State softball is now one win from its second national championship in three NCAA Tournaments. The No. 10 seed Seminoles kicked off the championship series of the Women’s College World Series on Tuesday night with an 8-4 win over top-seeded Oklahoma.

For the second night in a row, FSU jumped to a 7-0 lead. Kalei Harding got the scoring started with a 2-run home run in the third before adding a 2-run double an inning later. Sydney Sherrill added a 2-run single during a 5-run fourth. Harding and Kaley Mudge each finished with three hits for FSU.

Danielle Watson picked up the win for FSU, allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings. Kinzie Hansen and Nicole Mendes hit back-to-back solo home runs for Oklahoma in the fourth. Mackenzie Donihoo plated two runs with a single in the sixth inning as the Sooners brought the tying run to the plate. FSU turned to Kathryn Sandercock in the circle, who was able to get out of the jam.

FSU will have two chances to win one game to claim its second national title as a fastpitch program. The teams will square off again on Wednesday night. The contest begins at 7 p.m. ET and airs on ESPN.

Between the Lines

The Women’s College World Series was the lone scheduled athletic event scheduled for Tuesday.

On the Agenda

In addition to the Women’s College World Series, FSU track and field will begin the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday.

News and Notes

FSU track and field head coach Bob Braman was named USTFCCCA South Region Coach of the Year.

FSU baseball catcher Matheu Nelson was named a finalist for the Posey Award and a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award.
