The Daily Nole — May 10, 2021: FSU Soccer Beats Duke on PKs to Advance to College Cup

Lead Story

For the 11th time in program history, Florida State soccer is bound for the College Cup. After 110 scoreless minutes of soccer on Sunday, the top-seeded Seminoles knocked off Duke on penalty kicks, 5-3.

FSU made each of its five attempts in the penalty kick session. The lone save for the entire session came on Duke’s first attempt as FSU goalkeeper Cristina Roque saved Taylor Mitchell’s attempt. With a 4-3 lead, Yujie Zhao knocked her kick home to clinch the match for the Seminoles.

The Seminoles dominated the contest with 14 shots to just two for Duke. FSU however, was unable to score in regulation or two overtimes.

With the win, FSU improves to 14-0 and is back in the College Cup. The Seminoles will take on Virginia, who topped TCU 1-0 on Sunday. The contest takes place on Thursday.

Between the Lines

FSU’s soccer victory was the lone contest played on Sunday. FSU softball’s contest with Pittsburgh was cancelled by rain.

On the Agenda

FSU women’s soccer will begin its NCAA Regional on Monday in Louisville.

News and Notes

Polls for various sports will be updated on Monday.

FSU softball will be the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament. It will face either NC State or North Carolina on Thursday.
