The Daily Nole — May 6, 2021: FSU Soccer Advances to Elite Eight with 3-1 Win Over Penn State

Lead Story

Florida State soccer is one of the last eight teams standing. The top-seeded Seminoles advanced on Wednesday with a 3-1 win over Penn State in the Sweet 16.

The Nittany Lions actually scored first when Frankie Tagliaferri found the back of the net in the 20th minute. Kristina Lynch drew FSU even less than 12 minutes later.

FSU dominated statistically and went ahead for good in the 62nd minute when Clara Robbins scored to make it 2-1. After assisting on the Robbins’ goal, Gabby Carle scored on a penalty kick in the 69th minute.

FSU finished with 32 shots to just two for Penn State. Penn State’s Sam Coffey and FSU’s Yujie Zhao each added assists in the match.

With the win, FSU improved to 13-0 and advances to the Elite Eight. The Seminoles will face Duke on Sunday.

FSU’s soccer victory was the lone scheduled athletic event for Wednesday.

On the Agenda

There are no FSU athletic events scheduled for Thursday.

News and Notes

FSU women’s tennis’ Giulia Pairone and Emmanuelle Salas were invited to the NCAA Singles Championships. Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia were one of just 32 doubles teams selected to compete for a title.

FSU track and field’s Shanice Love was named ACC Women’s Co-Field Performer of the Week. On the men’s side, FSU’s Jo’Vaughn Martin was named ACC Men’s Co-Track Performer of the Week and Isaac Grimes was named ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Week.

FSU men’s golf was named the top seed for the Tallahassee Regional, which begins May 17.
