The running game was often non-existent for the Florida State offense last season, but that has not been the case thus far in 2019.

Through two games, junior running back Cam Akers is not only on a pace for a single-season FSU record when it comes to rushing yards, but he leads the ACC in that category. With 309 yards on the ground, Akers sits atop the conference and ranks fourth nationally in rushing yards. Among Power 5 backs, only Mississippi State’s Kylin Hall, who has 320 yards on the season, has more.

Through two games, Akers has averaged 6.1 yards per carry, but his damage has not been limited to the ground. Akers also has seven catches for 67 yards and a score. Among Seminoles, only redshirt sophomore Tamorrion Terry has more receiving yards.

Akers not only leads the ACC in rushing yards, but he is tied for the conference lead in touchdowns. Akers has four total touchdowns on the season, which is even with Boston College running back A.J. Dillon for the most in the conference this season.

Akers enjoyed a career-day in last week’s 45-44 overtime victory over Louisiana-Monroe and the Seminoles needed every bit of it. Akers finished with 248 yards from scrimmage and three total touchdowns. That included the 44-yard touchdown reception that put FSU ahead in the fourth quarter after it had fallen behind and the 3-yard touchdown rush in overtime that put the Seminoles ahead for good.

The 309 yards rushing through two games is the most for a Florida State running back since Dalvin Cook rushed for 422 yards early in the 2015 season. That included a 266-yard effort against South Florida in Week 2. The Bulls, at the time, were led by Akers’ current head coach — Willie Taggart.
