Staff Predictions: FSU at Syracuse

Mitch White/FSU athletics

The Florida State Seminoles hit the road for an unexpectedly crucial game against the Syracuse Orange on Saturday. It’s a bit weird to have a hurricane hitting the United States without FSU being affected, but rest assured, the game is still on as planned for Saturday.

FSU desperately needs some momentum before hitting the meat of the ACC schedule. But the Virginia Tech and Samford performances have left much to be desired. Meanwhile, Syracuse looks to start 3-0 on the season with the high likelihood of reaching 4-0 before a road game against Clemson. That would put the Orange on the national radar with a star quarterback in Eric Dungey leading the way.

We here at The Daily Nole have provided a week’s worth of content aimed at giving you all the information necessary for this game. Check out some of our stories below if you haven’t already:

Staff Predictions

Lead writer Clint Eiland: This game more or less hinges on what you think the offense will do. Is it going to regroup and continue improve on the past two contests? If so, the potential is there for home run plays to take over and for FSU’s athletes to make things happen on their own. Everyone expects Syracuse to score at least 20 points in this one. It’s a matter of the FSU offense not putting the team in a hole early.

Perhaps it’s the fact that I’ve watched more FSU than Syracuse, but I’ll take the Seminoles by a slim margin. I think head coach Willie Taggart understands how crucial this game is for season momentum. The team has had a full week to prepare and wants to go into the tough stretch of the schedule with a 3-1 record. FSU’s offense will finally show life against a Power 5 opponent, while the defense will do a respectable job of slowing the Syracuse playmakers. It’ll go down to the wire though. FSU 45, Syracuse 42.

Editor Mike Ferguson: From Florida State’s standpoint, I actually feel better about the Seminoles’ chances now than I did earlier in the week. Slowing Eric Dungey and finding a way to put up points against a putrid defense for the Orange will be the keys for FSU. Getting ahead early would do wonders for Florida State’s confidence. I made a pick for Athlon Sports earlier in the week and I’m going to stick with it. I’ll take the team with the home field and the quarterback more comfortable in his offense. Orange 34, Seminoles 31.

Digital content manager Edwin Collins: Willie Taggart’s offense finally hits its stride and surprises quite a few people. FSU wins on the road, 45-14.
