Florida State legendary baseball coach Mike Martin isn’t calling it quits just yet, but that time is on the horizon.

According to a release, Martin, 74, will coach his final season with the Seminoles in 2019. Martin surpassed Augie Garrido on the all-time wins list earlier this year and now has 1,987 career wins to his name.

Sources had previously told The Daily Nole that the 2018 season was set to be the last for Martin, but during last week’s The Weekly Nole Podcast, we mentioned that things were not as definite. Other potential staff announcements could soon be coming.

“There is no finer representative of Florida State University and no better champion of college baseball than Mike Martin,” athletic director Stan Wilcox said in a release. “His passion, dedication and demand for on-field success are as strong as they were the day he got the job, and I’m eager to watch what he and our team can accomplish next year. We will conduct a national search at the conclusion of the 2019 season.”

Martin has led the Seminoles to at least 40 wins in each of his 39 seasons as head coach. FSU went 43-19 this season before being ousted by Samford and Mississippi State in the Tallahassee Regional.

Over his 39 years as head coach, Martin has guided FSU to eight ACC Tournament championships and nine regular-season titles. This past season in Durham, FSU became the first team since Wake Forest in 1998 and 1999 to win consecutive ACC Tournaments.

“I’m glad that they want me to continue coaching next season and I thank all our former and current coaches, staff and most importantly our players for the consistent success of our baseball program,” Martin said in a release. “You don’t win at our level without student-athletes who dedicate themselves to playing as a team and playing for something more than themselves.”

Martin has also led the Seminoles to the College World Series 16 times with 2017 being the most recent. Martin was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.

“Coach Martin is a great ambassador for both Florida State University and the game of baseball, and I am pleased he will return as our coach next season,” FSU President John Thrasher said in a release. “His abilities as a coach are reflected in the fact that he is the winningest college coach in the history of the game, but he also has shown a generation what a program run with pride, class and proper priorities looks like.”
