FSU Rallies Past Kansas to Stay Unbeaten, 10-5

Florida State’s unblemished record remained intact on Monday night as the Seminoles came from five runs down to top Kansas at Dick Howser Stadium, 10-5.

A 5-run fifth inning was the huge blow delivered by the Seminoles, who improved to 12-0. FSU will go for the 2-game sweep on Tuesday night.

The Good: Florida State had its best offensive effort in a midweek game this season as it scored 10 runs on 11 hits on Monday night. Spots three through six in the order accounted for eight of the 11 hits and seven of the 10 runs scored. The 10 runs was the most for the Seminoles this season since scoring 11 in the opener. FSU pitching also struck out 13 batters.

The Bad: After not allowing an earned run in either of his first two starts, Florida State pitcher Andrew Karp looked human on Monday night. Karp still got the win, tossing five innings, but allowed five runs — three earned — and eight hits. Kansas’ James Consentino became the first player to take Karp deep this season.

The Ugly: After being solid in the field for the early parts of the season, the FSU defense was a bit sloppy for a second straight day. After Cooper Swanson dropped a fly ball in left field to let UNC-Asheville’s first run score on Sunday, Drew Mendoza committed a fielding error in the second inning on Monday that should have been the third out of the inning, but ultimately led to two Jayhawk runs.

Studs of the Game: Jonah Scolaro continues to be lights out in the FSU bullpen. Scolaro worked four innings of shutout relief on Monday, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out six. Cal Raleigh was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Rhett Aplin and Drew Mendoza were each 2-for-3. Aplin scored twice while Mendoza had a run and two RBIs. James Consentino was 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored for Kansas. Jaxx Groshans was 2-for-5 with three RBIs for the Jayhawks in the loss.

Duds of the Game: Leadoff hitter Rudy Karre was 0-for-5 for Kansas while on the mound, Brandon Ponticelli and Chase Kaplan combined to give up five runs in just a total of 1/3 of an inning of work. Mike Salvatore was 0-for-4 for FSU.
