With National Signing Day less than a week away for Florida State, the scholarship limit situation has become more clear. Over the last four days, the Seminoles have landed three 4-star commitments in linebacker Xavier Peters and defensive tackle Dennis Briggs on Sunday and wide receiver Warren Thompson on Wednesday.
It was reported on Thursday that four players — quarterback J.J. Cosentino, defensive tackle Darvin Taylor and offensive linemen David Robbins and Ethan Frith were leaving the program. Including the 15 current commitments, that puts the Seminoles at 80 scholarship players.
Assuming there is no other attrition — which is unlikely — and that all commitments qualify, that would allow FSU head coach Willie Taggart to sign 20 total players to his first recruiting class with the Seminoles. We could speculate about who could be next to leave for a number of reasons, but for the “Conceivable Departures” category, we reserved that for players where questions have already been raised.
Wide receiver Da’Vante Phillips was suspended all of last season, but is still listed on the FSU athletic site roster. Malique Jackson, a converted defensive back, was a senior last season for the Seminoles, but is eligible for a redshirt since he didn’t appear in a game. As for Peters, the recent linebacker commitment, there is speculation that he will not qualify academically.
