The Daily Nole — Dec. 18, 2017: FSU Women Suffer First Loss at Texas

Lead Story

One day after Florida State’s men’s basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season, the women did likewise. No. 12 FSU lost at eighth-ranked Texas on Sunday afternoon, 87-72.

Brooke McCarty paced the Longhorns with a game-high 24 points on 10 of 13 shooting to lead four Texas players in double-figures. Ariel Atkins added 17 points in the win while Lashann Higgs added 15. Jatarie White finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Things couldn’t have started much better for Florida State as the Seminoles led by as many as 11 midway through the first quarter. Texas led 41-40 at the break before shooting 61 percent in the second half. FSU was held to 38 percent.

Guard A.J. Alix led FSU with 21 points and eight assists. Shakayla Thomas finished with 19 points while Nausia Woolfolk and Imani Wright each finished with 10.

With the loss, FSU falls to 10-1. It will visit Creighton on Thursday.

Between the Lines

FSU’s women’s basketball loss was the only scheduled event for Sunday.

On the Agenda

The FSU men will host Charleston Southern on Monday. The contest begins at 7 p.m. EST and airs on ESPNU.

News and Notes

Oregon will pay defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt $1.7 million annually to retain him on staff.

Oregon running backs coach Donte’ Pimpleton is expected to join Willie Taggart’s staff at FSU.

The ACC will announce players of the week for various sports.

FSU falls from 19th in both polls to 24th in the AP Poll and 25th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

FSU basketball defeated Charleston Southern 69-58 on Monday night.

FSU baseball’s Tyler Holton was named a first-team preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Catcher Cal Raleigh was a second-team selection.
