FSU-Miami Postponed Due to Hurricane Irma

Florida State and Miami each canceled their respective Week 2 games due to Hurricane Irma. Now, the Category 5 hurricane has caused 2017’s edition of FSU-Miami to be postponed.

FSU’s contest against the Hurricanes has been postponed until Oct. 7, per the ACC.

Hurricanes defensive coordinator Manny Diaz voiced his concern on Twitter, saying that it would “take a miracle” for the two teams to play on Sept. 16. “It will just about take a miracle for there to be football in this state NEXT weekend, let alone this one,” Diaz wrote in response to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy. “… are we still talking about football with all these lives in the balance?”

This will not be the first time that FSU and Miami had to postpone the game. As our editor, Mike Ferguson noted here, the 2004 contest was pushed to the following Friday due to Hurricane Frances.

“Ultimately, while we want to try and play the games, we do not want to do so at the expense of the best interest of our citizens, our fans, our players and our students,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford said in an interview with ESPN on Friday. “If the need [to reschedule] arises, we’ll do the best we possibly can do to do that, and in as fair a way as it can be done.”

“Throughout the state of Florida and the needs that are there, these kinds of events put in perspective where football lies. … As important as football is to all of us, it really pales in comparison when you’re talking about life-threatening events and the ramifications of something like this hurricane.”

While Miami has yet to practice since Tuesday – many members of Mark Richt’s team either evacuated the area or went home to their families – FSU practiced all week, including Saturday.

FSU will not take the field again until Sept. 23, when N.C. State makes the trip to Tallahassee.
