The Daily Nole — April 3, 2017: FSU Women’s Golf Wins Clemson Invitational

Happy Monday, Florida State fans. For those of you returning to work, we’ll try to make your work day more enjoyable by keeping you informed. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State’s fourth-ranked women’s golf team wrapped up the 3-day Clemson Invitational with a come-from-behind victory on Sunday. After finishing the first round in fourth place, the Seminoles entered Sunday tied for second at -7.

FSU shot -3 on the day to surpass Furman, who entered Sunday with a 1-stroke lead. The Paladins shot an even par for the day to finish two strokes behind the Seminoles. Rival Florida entered the day even with FSU, but shot +1 to finish in third place and three strokes back.

Florida State not only won the team title, but the individual title as well. That honor belonged to Matilda Castren, who finished -9. She also rallied on Sunday to beat Texas’ Sophia Schubert, Furman’s Alice Chen and Florida’s Maria Torres all by two strokes.

FSU’s next contest will also be in South Carolina. This time, it will be the ACC Championships in Pawley’s Island, beginning on April 13.

Between the Lines

In addition to golf, FSU softball completed a 3-game sweep of Pittsburgh with a 5-0 victory. Like the FSU baseball team the night prior, the men’s tennis team fell to North Carolina 5-2 on Sunday while the women defeated Syracuse, 4-3. FSU baseball let a 4-run lead slip away in a 9-7 loss to North Carolina, which completed the sweep for the Tar Heels.

There are no FSU athletic events scheduled for Monday.

News and Notes

The ACC will announce players of the week for various sports.

Florida State fell 12 spots to No. 24 in the Baseball America Poll. In the D1Baseball.com, FSU fell 10 spots to No. 22. FSU fell out of the Collegiate Baseball top 30. In the NCBWA Poll, Florida State fell 10 spots from 10th to No. 20.

North Carolina and Gonzaga will play for college basketball’s national championship.

FSU starting pitcher Tyler Holton was named one of Collegiate Baseball’s players of the week. Holton was also named the ACC’s Co-Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season.

FSU remains No. 4 in the AVCA beach volleyball poll.
