The Daily Nole — March 18, 2017: FSU Beach Volleyball Goes 3-0

It’s the weekend, Florida State fans. Before you settle in and wait to watch the Seminoles try to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

While basketball is at the forefront of Florida State fans’ minds, the beach volleyball team had an outstanding day on Friday. The Seminoles won three matches out in Hawaii, beating Utah 4-1 and both Arizona and Hawaii by 3-2 margins.

Against Arizona in the second match of the day, it came down to the tandem of Katie Horton and Francesa Goncalves winning the decisive duel. They beat the Arizona duo of Hailey Devlin and Sam Manley, 21-15, 18-21, 15-12. The same duo clinched the match against Hawaii, beating Ari Homayun and Carly Kan, 21-12, 11-21, 15-12.

For the season, FSU is 7-3. The Seminoles will wrap up their trip to Hawaii with matches against defending national champion USC and Nebraska.

Between the Lines

Aside from beach volleyball, the FSU women’s golf team finished the first day of the Notre Dame Clover Cup in first place on Friday. The FSU track and field teams competed in Tampa and Atlanta. FSU baseball defeated Virginia Tech, 9-2. The FSU women’s tennis team was defeated 7-0 by Duke, but the men did defeat Clemson, 6-1. Behind a 3-hit shutout from Meghan King, FSU softball defeated Notre Dame, 6-0. FSU women’s hoops defeated Western Illinois in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 87-66.

On the Agenda

Aside from beach volleyball on Saturday, FSU women’s golf will continue play at the Notre Dame Clover Cup. FSU baseball and softball will continue their series against Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, respectively. Both contests begin at 1 p.m. EST. The softball game airs on ACC Network Extra. The FSU men’s basketball team takes on Xavier in the NCAA Tournament round of 32. That contest begins at 6:10 p.m. EST and airs on TNT.

News and Notes

Former FSU safety and Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle will begin his residency at Harvard.

Son of former FSU wide receiver Kevin Knox, Kevin Knox Jr. has been named Mr. Basketball in the state of Florida.

FSU baseball let a 10-2 lead slip away on Saturday in a 13-12 loss to Virginia Tech.

Xavier defeated Florida State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 91-66. FSU finishes the season 26-9.

Despite the 25-point loss in the NCAA Tournament, FSU head basketball coach Leonard Hamilton is expected to receive a 2-year extension.
