The Daily Nole — Sept. 30, 2016: Josh Sweat to Play Against UNC

Mitch White/FSU athletics

It’s a busy Friday for Florida State athletics as four different FSU programs are in action. The action will lead us into Saturday’s highly-anticipated football contest against North Carolina at Doak Campbell Stadium. It’ll be FSU’s first game against an FBS school at home as well as its first ACC home game. Stay tuned here throughout the day as we update our news and notes section.

Lead Story

A week after having knee surgery to repair his meniscus, sophomore defensive end Josh Sweat will play for the Seminoles against North Carolina on Saturday, head coach Jimbo Fisher said Thursday. Sweat injured his left knee — the same one he injured severely as a high school senior — in the final practice before FSU’s Sept. 17 contest at Louisville. Sweat played sparingly against the Cardinals, but missed last week after undergoing the procedure.

Getting Sweat back in the lineup should serve as a nice boost to Florida State’s depth up front. Freshman defensive end Brian Burns has been playing well opposite senior DeMarcus Walker in Sweat’s absence. For the year, Sweat has just three tackles, including one for loss.

Between the Lines

There were no FSU athletic events on Thursday.

On the Agenda

The Florida State women’s tennis team will be taking part in the Bedford Cup in Tampa while the cross country teams will be in South Bend for the Notre Dame Invitational. FSU swimming and diving will hold its intrasquad Garnet and Golden meet while the Seminoles’ volleyball team will be in action at Tully Gymnasium against Syracuse. The match begins at 7 p.m. EST and will air on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

Backup quarterback Sean Maguire is listed as questionable for Saturday’s contest against North Carolina.

Tight end Mavin Saunders and defensive end Jalen Wilkerson were recognized for their academic achievement with the Golden Torch Award.
