It was again a slow week for Florida State athletics, but that is expected to change over the weekend. The Seminoles open the NCAA Softball Tournament and complete a big weekend baseball series with Miami. For now, here’s whose stock is up and whose stock is down around Nole Nation:

Stock Up

FSU pitcher Drew Carlton: After taking the loss against Duke in his previous start, Florida State starting pitcher Drew Carlton was outstanding in Thursday’s loss to Miami. Carlton allowed just one run on two hits in five innings while striking out six. FSU led 2-1 when he left the game, but unfortunately for the Seminoles, the offense couldn’t put up any more runs and the bullpen couldn’t hold Miami at bay.

Stock Down

FSU pitcher Jim Voyles: Despite a stellar season, Florida State junior reliever Jim Voyles has looked vulnerable since returning after taking a line drive off the head. Voyles got the win against Duke on Sunday, but still gave up a run in 2 1/3 innings. On Thursday night, Voyles took his first loss of the season, allowing two runs (one earned) in 1 2/3 innings.

Beating rivals in baseball: Last season, Florida State went 4-2 during the regular season against its two biggest rivals, taking two of three from both Florida and Miami. This season, the Seminoles are 0-4. FSU was winless in three games against the Gators and dropped the first of three against Miami on Thursday night.

Worth Noting

  • Louisville defeated Wake Forest on the diamond Thursday night to clinch the ACC Atlantic title. That means the highest FSU could be seeded in the ACC Baseball Tournament would be third.
  • FSU’s women’s golf team begins the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon on Friday.
Kickoff times for four FSU football games were announced on Thursday. FSU opens the season in Orlando on Sept. 5 against Ole Miss.
  • Florida State sophomore safety Derwin James was named to Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list on Wednesday. The award annually goes to the defensive player who performs on the field and in the community.
  • FSU softball begins the NCAA Tournament on Friday against Florida A&M. The Seminoles are hosting the Tallahassee Regional. The regional is double-elimination.
