It’s Thursday, Florida State fans. As the weekend approaches, we’ll help you get there by updating the news and notes section.

Lead Story

Three of the last four between Florida State and Florida on the softball diamond have now been won on walk-offs, but on Wednesday, things finally went the Seminoles’ way.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, Alex Powers’ belted a 2-run walk-off home run to right field to lift No. 2 FSU to a 3-1 win over the top-ranked Gators. The victory snapped a streak of 16 losses in 17 games to Florida and allowed the Seminoles to complete a perfect home slate during the regular season.

After each pushing runs across in the first inning, the teams combined to go scoreless over the next nine before Powers ended the contest. Janell Wheaton singled in Florida’s only run in the first before Jessica Warren answered in the bottom half of the inning with a solo blast — the first off Florida pitcher Kelly Barnhill this season. Powers’ game-winner in the 11th also came off Barnhill and gave the Florida standout her first loss of the year.

Meghan King allowed just two hits in 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for FSU to pick up the win. The Seminoles now sit at 48-3-1 and will conclude the regular season with three games at Oregon.

Between the Lines

The softball contest between the nation’s top two teams was the only scheduled FSU athletic event.
