The Daily Rundown — April 25, 2017: Burroughs Goes First in NPF Draft

Maury Neipris/FSU athletics

It’s Tuesday, Florida State fans. We’ll do our best to keep you up on the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Former Florida State baseball pitcher Paul Wilson and former quarterback Jameis Winston now have company.

On Monday night, FSU softball pitcher Jessica Burroughs became the third FSU athlete to ever be selected first overall in a professional draft when she was taken No. 1 by the USSSA Pride in the National Pro Fastpitch Draft. For the year, the senior right-hander is 22-2 with a 0.98 ERA.

When Burroughs joins her Vierra-based team, she’ll have at least one familiar face joining her. That’s because FSU first baseman Alex Powers was taken 10th overall or with the last pick in the second round by the Pride. The reigning ACC Player of the Year, Powers is hitting .387 this season with six home runs and 39 RBIs.

Between the Lines

Zoe Casas’ RBI single in the seventh inning lifted FSU softball to a 5-4 win over Louisville on Monday night.

On the Agenda

FSU baseball will visit Stetson at 5 p.m. EST on ESPN3.

News and Notes

Left-hander Drew Parrish will start for FSU against the Hatters on Tuesday.

Florida State’s Kellion Knibb earned ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week.

Dylan Busby was among Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA’s hitters of the week after going 8-for-18 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in four games.

Florida State completed the season sweep of Stetson with an 11-5 victory in DeLand on Tuesday.
