Q&A with Khalan Laborn: FSU Commit Not Afraid of Internal Competition

Virginia Beach running back Khalan Laborn made one of the loudest commitments in recent history in Oregon last month when he pulled up in a Lamborghini with a Florida State logo on the side. That was Laborn’s way of making his commitment to Florida State known, although he said he didn’t get to drive the car.

Laborn, a 5-10, 200-pound back out of Bishop Sullivan Catholic, is the 42nd-ranked overall recruit for 2017 and the No. 2 all-purpose back, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Laborn talks frequently to FSU running backs coach Jay Graham and has big plans for when he arrives in Tallahassee.

We were able to catch up with the talented back:

MF: First off, Khalan, I want to say thanks for agreeing to talk to me. I’m sure you get asked this question a lot, but why Florida State?

Laborn: It just feels home there. I feel pretty comfortable there.

MF: Who did you grow up rooting for?

Laborn: I mean, my favorite player was Deion Sanders.

MF: Khalan, we know you can run with speed, we know you can run with some power, we know you can catch the ball, what’s an aspect of your game that you think sometimes gets overlooked?

Laborn: I just play. It’s like “how did you do that?” I just put my mind to it and am like I just do it. I just put my mind to something and then I run the play and it works.

MF: I don’t know if you’ve thought much about this, but there could be a day where you share a backfield with Jacques Patrick, Zaquandre White, Amir Rasul and James Cook. How good does that backfield have the potential to be? What’s your take on internal competition and how if makes a team better?

Laborn: There’s definitely going to be a lot of competition, but I like competition. We’re all on the same team, but at the end of the day, it’s still a competition. I won’t worry about it too much. I’m confident.

MF: Personally, what are some of the things you want to accomplish during your time in Tallahassee?

Laborn: Win the Heisman, win games definitely and try to be a top-10 pick.

MF: What is Florida State getting in Khalan Laborn?

Laborn: A good kid that’s mentally tough and a warrior.

MF: Is there any player you grew up idolizing or would compare your game to?

Laborn: I try to be like Todd Gurley or Reggie Bush in a way, just flexible and can make people miss and run people over and just make crazy plays happen.

MF: I have to ask you about the Lambo. Was it your idea? Someone else’s idea?

Laborn: It was kind of a combined idea. We just had to come up with an entrance. Personally, I’m more of a Porsche 911 guy.
