Saturday Seminole Summary: Martin Jr. to Succeed Father as FSU Baseball Coach, Two Noles Selected in NBA Draft

Florida State’s 2018-19 athletic year officially came to an end on Wednesday night as the FSU baseball program fell to Texas Tech in a College World Series elimination game, 4-1.

The loss not only ended FSU’s season, but the legendary career of head coach Mike Martin. It took FSU just two days to select a successor as son Mike Martin Jr. was named the new head coach on Friday.

A catcher for his father from 1993-95, the younger Martin has been an assistant for the Seminoles for the last 22 seasons. Martin has oversaw hitting and recruiting.

The older Martin will retire as the winningest college coach in any sport with 2,029 career victories. Martin led FSU to the College World Series 17 times, but unfortunately was never able to take home that coveted national championship.

FSU went 1-2 at the College World Series this year in Omaha, but managed just two runs over three games. After a 1-0 win over Arkansas to start their trip to Omaha, FSU was defeated by Michigan in the winner’s bracket, 2-0.

On Thursday night, two Florida State hoops players were selected in the 2019 NBA Draft. Both are now members of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Forward Mfiondu Kabengele became the third FSU player to be selected in the first round in four years when he was taken with by the Brooklyn Nets with the 27th overall pick. His draft rights were traded to the Clippers. With the 48th pick in the NBA Draft, the Clippers used their second-round pick to select slasher Terance Mann.

The ACC Sixth Man of the Year, Kabengele led the Seminoles in scoring with 13.2 points per game as a redshirt sophomore last season while shooting better than 50 percent from the field and grabbing six rebounds. Mann, a senior, shot 51 percent from the field last season and 39 percent from beyond the arc while averaging 11.4 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game.

Big Picture: FSU’s improbable run to Omaha and the career of legendary head coach Mike Martin came to an end this week. The Seminoles will likely lose all four players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, but will return the majority of the team next season. Martin will be succeeded by his son, Mike Martin Jr.

Michigan’s Jesse Franklin homered on the second at-bat of the game and that was all the Wolverines needed to push Florida State to the brink of elimination. Michigan starting pitcher Tommy Henry allowed just three hits in a complete-game shutout to go with 10 strikeouts. Two of the FSU hits came from lead-off man Mike Salvatore. Jimmy Kerr plated Michigan’s other run. Out of the FSU bullpen, Chase Haney and Jonah Scolaro combined to throw 4.1 no-hit innings of relief. Scolaro struck out each of the six batters he faced.

Wednesday, June 19 (College World Series)
Texas Tech second baseman Brian Klein’s solo home run in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and put the Red Raiders ahead for good as they eliminated Florida State from the College World Series. Klein and Dylan Neuse each scored two runs in the victory. Texas Tech added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning — one earned — off FSU closer J.C. Flowers. Robby Martin scored FSU’s only run on an errant throw from Texas Tech catcher Braxton Fulford. FSU managed just three hits for the second game in a row.

Other News

FSU women’s hoops will host Michigan State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 5.

Florida State beach volleyball head coach Brooke Niles is coaching the USA U21 team at the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Thailand, which concludes on Sunday.

FSU women’s golfers Amanda Doherty, Frida Kinhult and Beatrice Wallin were all named to the All-ACC Academic team.

Alabama State will receive $400,000 to play FSU football on Nov. 16.

Former FSU offensive lineman Landon Dickerson will reportedly enroll at Alabama.

FSU women’s tennis’ Andrea Garcia, Petra Hule, Ariana Rahmanparast, Ana Oparenovic, Emmanuelle Salas and Carla Touly were all named to the All-ACC Academic team. The six selections was the most in the conference.

FSU hoops center Christ Koumadje has signed with the Philadelphia 76ers as an undrafted free agent.
