On My Mind Monday: What’s the Most Runs Per Game for FSU Baseball in Regional Play?

There is a different feeling around the Florida State baseball team after an outstanding showing over the weekend in Athens.

The Seminoles advanced to the NCAA Super Regional round for a 17th time in 21 years on Sunday night with a 10-1 drubbing of No. 4 national seed, Georgia. FSU defeated Georgia the night prior, 12-3, after opening the Athens Regional with a 13-7 victory over Florida Atlantic.

Over the regional, FSU put up 35 runs, averaging 11.7 per game. But where does that rank all-time for FSU teams since the NCAA Tournament went to the current format in 1999?

Here’s a look at the five highest scoring regionals for the Seminoles in terms of runs per game:

2009 Tallahassee Regional

Run per game: 20.3 runs per game (three games)
Summary: Florida State scored 61 runs over three games during the 2009 Tallahassee Regional. That number was largely spiked by a 37-6 victory over Ohio State in the deciding game of the regional. FSU did so on 38 hits with infielder Stephen Cardullo being responsible for seven hits. The Seminoles opened the regional with a 16-4 win over Marist before topping Georgia, 8-2, in the winner’s bracket.

1999 Tallahassee Regional

Run per game: 15.7 runs per game (three games)
Summary: The first year of the changes to the NCAA Tournament watched Florida State rack up 47 runs over its three Tallahassee Regional games. More than half of those came in the opener against The Citadel as the Seminoles cruised to a 24-6 victory. From there, FSU felt little resistance with a 9-2 win over Jacksonville and a 14-3 victory over Providence.

2008 Tallahassee Regional

Run per game: 14.8 runs per game (five games)
Summary: Florida State’s third-highest scoring regional ever surprisingly started with the Seminoles suffering a shutout loss. After getting blanked by Bucknell, 7-0, to start the NCAA Tournament, FSU rallied to take the regional by winning the next four games. Over those four contests, the Seminoles didn’t score fewer than 16 runs in any game. After a 17-11 elimination game victory over rival Florida, FSU got revenge against Bucknell with a 24-9 victory. FSU capped the Tallahassee Regional with wins over Tulane by 17-8 and 16-7 scores.

2016 Tallahassee Regional

Run per game: 14.3 runs per game (three games)
Summary: The 2016 Tallahassee Regional was a breeze for the Seminoles. FSU opened and closed the regional with 18-6 victories over Alabama State and South Alabama, respectively. The winner’s bracket contest was a 7-2 victory over Southern Mississippi. Unfortunately for FSU, the Seminoles followed up a Tallahassee Regional in which they scored 43 runs in three games with a Gainesville Super Regional effort in which they managed just three runs in three games.

2019 Athens Regional

Run per game: 11.7 runs per game (three games)
Summary: The recent Athens Regional saw Florida State score 35 runs in three games. After pounding out 13 runs, six homers and 20 hits in a 13-7 victory over Florida Atlantic to open the regional, the Seminoles notched stunning blowout wins over No. 4 national seed, Georgia, by 12-3 and 10-1 scores. The Bulldogs had lost just three times in Athens all season and had not yielded more than seven runs in any home game all year.
