3-star Defensive End Josh Griffis Commits to FSU

The 2020 Florida State football recruiting class expanded on Friday afternoon. 3-star defensive end Josh Griffis announced his commitment to the Seminoles shortly after taking a visit:

Griffis and Florida State have had mutual interest for a few months. Griffis was previously a Florida commit who backed off that pledge in February, shortly after receiving an FSU offer.

Things moved quickly from there on out. Despite receiving more offers from Penn State, Georgia Tech, and Nebraska, Griffis was considered a heavy lean towards FSU. It was made official Friday.

He plays at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, though he did play at Clay High School in Green Cove Springs prior to transferring. Griffis is a very sound football player, who shows impressive bend around the edge. Griffis also shows underrated bull-rush ability against bigger offensive linemen.

He gained more attention in recruiting circles after an impressive showing at the Under Armour Orlando camp in February. His testing numbers are not elite, but they are certainly good enough to be a productive player at the Power 5 level. Florida State might want to develop him as a pure pass rusher, given what he has shown on tape.

Griffis is the eighth commit in Florida State’s class. He currently ranks as the 705th overall player and the 26th ranked weakside defensive end, according to the 247Sport composite rating. Chances are he will rise in the rankings down the road, though his current ranking is a bit of a mystery, considering the chatter around him after the recent Orlando camp.

Florida State’s class now ranks 11th in the country and fourth in the ACC. The Seminoles will likely take two more defensive ends in the class, and likely two or three other defensive tackles.
