For one quarter on Saturday, Florida State looked capable of standing toe-to-toe with No. 2 Clemson. After that, reality set in.

The Tigers (8-0, 5-0 ACC) handed FSU its worst home loss ever, 59-10. Clemson took advantage of a roughing the kicker penalty following a missed field goal to score the game’s first touchdown and never looked back.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Clemson scored 28 points in the second quarter and 24 more in the third. FSU (4-4, 2-4 ACC) broke up the shutout on a 35-yard field goal by Ricky Aguayo late in the third quarter.

Florida State self destructed with regularity throughout the day. Trevor Lawrence passed for 314 yards and four touchdowns for Clemson. Amari Rodgers and Tee Higgins each caught a pair of touchdowns.

One of the bright spots for FSU came in the fourth quarter as cornerback A.J. Lytton recorded his first career interception in the end zone to thwart a Clemson scoring drive. FSU’s Nyqwan Murray and Zaquandre White were both ejected in the loss. James Blackman found Keyshawn Helton for a 73-yard score for FSU’s only touchdown of the day —- the first of Helton’s career — to cap the scoring.

Up next for Clemson is a home date with Louisville. FSU will try to get back over .500 at N.C. State.
