Florida State Inches Past Miami, 2-0

Florida State moved one step closer to giving Mike Martin the wins record on Friday night. The Seminoles defeated the rival Miami Hurricanes 2-0 in a game where offense was hard to come by.

With the victory, FSU hit the 30-win mark for a 54th straight season. Martin will look to tie Texas legend Augie Garrido for the all-time wins record on Saturday as the Seminoles go for the series victory.

The Good: Drew Parrish was an absolute monster on the mound Friday. He went for eight innings, 117 pitches, and didn’t give up a single earned run. He also set a career-high with 13 strikeouts. If Florida State wants to make a postseason run, it’ll need its starting pitchers to consistently give those types of performances.

The Bad: Florida State scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and took an early 2-0 lead. Both teams promptly went freezing cold on offense for the rest of the night. Neither had more than five hits, and there were only a few opportunities with runners in scoring position.

The Ugly: FSU had a golden chance to more or less wrap it up in the seventh inning. Cal Raleigh and Drew Mendoza made it to third and second base respectively, with just one out on the board. Nick Derr and Cooper Swanson were the next two batters up. Derr struck out and Swanson flied out. In a contest decided by two early runs, the seventh inning was disappointing for FSU and could’ve given it some security.

Studs of the Game: Drew Parrish is an obvious choice. FSU catcher Cal Raleigh is another one for hitting the lone home run of the game and bringing in the only two runs.

FSU almost let the game slip away in the ninth. Conor Grady started the inning and gave up a single before throwing away a hideous pick-off attempt at first. He then walked the ensuing batter and hit the next one, loading the bases with just one out. Jonah Scolaro came in and was able to get his rhythm back with two strikeouts to end the game. Quite the refreshing twist for Scolaro after recent outings.

Duds of the Game: Willy Escala is one of the top hitters in Miami’s lineup (batting .289 this year) but you wouldn’t have known it from Friday’s game. He went 0-for-3 and struck out all three times.

Extra Innings: This past week has had gorgeous weather for relaxing outside. So knowing how luck works, it’ll be 90 degrees and scorching when I have to wear my graduation regalia next Saturday.
