Lead Story

Florida State sophomore third baseman Drew Mendoza was among 40 players named to the midseason watch list for the most prestigious award in college baseball.

Mendoza and six other ACC players were among the midseason selections for the Golden Spikes Award, which goes to college baseball’s most outstanding player, listed on Tuesday. Mendoza unfortunately followed that up with an 0-for-4 effort with three strikeouts in a 6-3 loss to rival Florida on Tuesday night.

For the year, Mendoza is hitting .315 with three home runs and 24 RBIs. Mendoza hopes to join Mike Fuentes (1981), Mike Loynd (1986), J.D. Drew (1997) and Buster Posey (2008) as Seminoles to win the award.

Between the Lines

FSU men’s golf finished in fourth place at the Gary Koch Invitational on Tuesday. FSU baseball fell to rival Florida for an eighth straight time, 6-3.

On the Agenda

FSU softball will host rival Florida on Wednesday night. The contest begins at 7 p.m. EST and airs on ESPN2.

News and Notes

FSU softball freshman Sydney Sherrill was named ACC Softball Player of the Week and USA Softball National Player of the Week.

FSU baseball pitcher Andrew Karp will move to the weekend rotation.
