Bracketology: Seminoles Experience Small Climb

Florida State played just once this past week as the Seminoles topped Pittsburgh, 88-75, over the weekend.

According to the five “bracketologists” we refer to each week, the Seminoles have moved up in three of the brackets and down in one. Here’s a look:

Projections
ESPN: Midwest Region No. 6 vs. (11) Middle Tennessee State in Dallas (Feb. 22)
CBS Sports: South Region No. 7 vs. (10) Texas A&M in Detroit (Feb. 23)
SB Nation: Midwest Region No. 7 vs. (10) TCU in Nashville (Feb. 20); No. 7 seed, No. 27 overall (Feb. 23)
NBC Sports: South Region No. 6 vs. (11) St. Mary’s in Dallas (Feb. 23)
USA Today: East Region No. 8 vs. (9) Kansas State in Pittsburgh (Feb. 23)

Summary
The only bracket where the Seminoles fell was according to the USA Today duo of Shelby Mast and Scott Gleeson. After being a No. 7 last week, the Seminoles are now a No. 8 and matched up against Kansas State in Pittsburgh as part of the East Region. The Wildcats beat FSU 71-70 in November 1989 in the last meeting between the schools in the Great Alaska Shootout.

The Seminoles were seeded highest as No. 6 by NBC Sports’ Dave Ommen and ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, who had been the least kind to FSU previously. Lunardi pits FSU against Middle Tennessee State in Dallas as part of the Midwest Region. The only prior meeting was a 97-83 victory for the Blue Raiders in the 1989 NCAA Tournament. Ommen places the Seminoles in Dallas for the South Region to face St. Mary’s in what would be the first meeting between the schools.

Two of the five surveyed had FSU as a No. 7 seed. CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm pits the Seminoles against 10th-seeded Texas A&M in Detroit as part of the South Region. The last meeting between those teams came in the 2011 NCAA Tournament in Chicago, with the Seminoles winning 57-50. It was FSU as the No. 10 seed and the Aggies as the No. 7 during that meeting.

According to SB Nation’s Chris Dobbertean, who released his most recent bracket on Tuesday, the Seminoles are set to face No. 10 seed TCU. The Horned Frogs won 71-70 in Corpus Christi in November 2004 in the last contest. FSU beat TCU 96-87 in the opening round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament in Oklahoma City. In Dobbertean’s latest piece from Friday, the Seminoles are listed as the No. 27 overall seed.

Florida State will play a pair of road games this week at N.C. State on Sunday and Clemson on Wednesday. The Wolfpack were as high as No. 7, per the experts, and as low as a No. 11. The Tigers were either a No. 4 or a No. 5 in each of the brackets.
