Bracketology: FSU Rises Gradually Following Consecutive Wins

Colin Abbey/FSU athletics

Florida State has worked its way back to .500 in ACC play, following consecutive wins over Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. For the season, the Seminoles are 15-5 and an even 4-4 in conference.

As has been the case since we started tracking, the Seminoles are still listed as in the NCAA Tournament by each of the bracket experts we refer to. FSU has made some gradual gains from last week by climbing in the brackets of each of the four experts surveyed.

Projections
ESPN: Midwest Region No. 8 seed vs. (9) Alabama in Detroit (Jan. 25)
CBS Sports: West Region No. 7 seed vs. (10) Marquette (Jan. 26)
SB Nation: Midwest Region No. 8 seed vs. (9) Butler in Omaha (Jan. 24)
NBC Sports: East Region No. 8 seed vs. (9) Texas in Boston (Jan. 26)

Summary
CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm has the Seminoles seeded highest this week as a No. 7 and facing Marquette. Both ESPN’s Joe Lunardi and Dave Ommen of NBC Sports currently have FSU as a No. 8. Ommen has the Seminoles headed to Boston to face ninth-seeded Texas. Those teams haven’t met on the hardwood since December 1970 in an 80-78 FSU victory.

Lunardi pits Florida State against Alabama in Detroit while Palm matches the Seminoles up against Marquette, but doesn’t list a location. The last time FSU played either of those teams was in the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista in November 2009. After beating Alabama 60-51, the Seminoles took down Marquette for the title in that preseason tournament on a last-second shot by Solomon Alabi, 57-56.

Chris Dobbertean of SB Nation pits FSU against ninth-seeded Butler in what would be the first meeting between those schools since the Bulldogs topped the Seminoles in Hawaii during the Diamond Head Classic in December 2010, 67-64. Although he didn’t release a new bracket, it should be noted that Dobbertean updated his seedings on Friday and currently has FSU as the highest ranked No. 9 seed.

Upcoming for FSU this week is a home contest with Miami on Saturday, followed by a trip to Wake Forest next Wednesday. Palm has the Hurricanes penciled in currently as a No. 5 seed while Ommen has them as a No. 7. Miami is a No. 8 seed, according to the other two bracketologists. At 8-12 overall, Wake Forest does not appear in anyone’s bracket.
