If This is It: The Potentially Final Tallies for Fisher as FSU Head Coach

As fingers tap the keyboard, nothing is official, but the writing seems to be on the wall for Jimbo Fisher’s time in Tallahassee. If current trends continue and reports are true, the Florida State head coach will soon be on his way out to take a job as the head man at Texas A&M.

The offensive coordinator for Florida State from 2007-09 and the head coach since 2010, there’s no denying the accomplishments that Fisher has brought forward during his time with the Seminoles. Tasked with the prospect of following one of the legends in college football history in Bobby Bowden following three 7-6 seasons in four years, Fisher brought FSU back to college football’s pinnacle.

Most assumed that Fisher would coach FSU in Saturday’s regular season finale against Louisiana-Monroe, but at this point, that is not a given. It’s very possible that last weekend’s 38-22 rivalry victory over Florida will be the final game of Fisher’s tenure and if so, what a way to go out.

Assuming that’s the case, here’s a by-the-numbers look at how Fisher fared during his eight seasons as the head coach of the Seminoles:

Overall Record: 83-23
During his eight years as head coach at Florida State, Jimbo Fisher has averaged better than 10 wins per season and recorded at least 10 wins in six of his eight years. Over that span, FSU has defeated 35 different teams and Fisher has gotten the better of 46 different coaches. Fisher will have also defeated teams from 23 different states.

The teams Fisher beat most often were Wake Forest, Miami, Boston College and Florida — all seven times. Fisher defeated four different head coaches for rival Florida. Randy Shannon, who previously coached at Miami, was the only coach Fisher defeated at two schools. Idaho head coach Paul Petrino and Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino were the only set of brothers Fisher defeated.

ACC: 48-16
The 2017 campaign is the only season under Fisher where FSU did not have a winning record in ACC play as it finished just 3-5. In conference under Fisher, the Seminoles went 8-0 twice, 7-1 once, 6-2 twice and 5-3 twice prior to this season. If conference title games are included, the Seminoles went 51-17 against ACC competition during the Fisher era.

Home: 44-9
Although Doak Campbell Stadium has hardly struck fear in opponents over the last two seasons, it was a tough place to play during Fisher’s tenure. From the start of the 2013 season until October 2016, the Seminoles won 22 straight games at home.

Road: 29-10
During Fisher’s tenure, the Seminoles proved capable of beating anybody anywhere. FSU won nearly 75 percent of its games away from home and against rivals Miami and Florida on the road under Fisher, it was a perfect 8-0.

Neutral: 10-4
Half of the neutral field contests played under Fisher were bowls and four others were ACC title games. During the Fisher era however, the Seminoles won neutral-site contests in Atlanta, Orlando, Charlotte, Miami, Pasadena and Dallas.

Bowls: 5-2
Fisher’s teams tended to finish the season strong, going 5-2 in bowls. Fisher won each of his first four bowls, including a pair of BCS bowls. After losing in the College Football Playoff to Oregon in 2014 and to Houston in the 2015 Peach Bowl, Fisher’s Seminoles topped Michigan 33-32 last season in a memorable Orange Bowl.

vs. Top 25: 17-13
In 30 contests against ranked teams during the Fisher era, the Seminoles were on the winning end more often than not. These 30 victories include wins over No. 2 Auburn and No. 3 Clemson in 2013, No. 5 Notre Dame in 2014 and No. 6 Michigan last season.

vs. Teams from Florida: 18-2
Fisher won 90 percent of his games against in-state competition, including going 7-1 against both Florida and Miami. Fisher also went 3-0 against South Florida and 1-0 against Bethune-Cookman.

Top 25 Finishes: 7
While this season would have served as the exception, Fisher’s teams finished in the final polls in each of his first seven seasons. The Seminoles finished as high as No. 1, which came in 2013 and as low as No. 23 in 2011.

Top 10 Finishes: 4
From 2012 through last season, Fisher’s teams finished in the top 10 in all except one season. The Seminoles finished 10th in the AP Poll in 2012, first in 2013, fifth in 2014 and eighth last season.

ACC Titles: 3
Florida State’s three ACC titles of the Fisher era came in consecutive years from 2012-14. The Seminoles became the first team since the inception of the conference title game in 2005 to win it in three straight years. FSU defeated Georgia Tech in 2012 and 2014 and Duke in 2013. The Seminoles also reached the ACC Championship in 2010, but were defeated by Virginia Tech, 44-33.

National Titles: 1
The “Seminole moment” from the Fisher era will be the national championship in 2013. The Seminoles went a perfect 14-0 while winning by an average margin of nearly six touchdowns and scoring more points than any team in FBS history. Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jameis Winston led the offense while a slew of upperclassmen such as Telvin Smith, Lamarcus Joyner and Christian Jones anchored a defense that gave up the fewest points per game in the country.

FSU beat Auburn 34-31 in the final BCS National Championship by overcoming an early 21-3 lead. Winston found wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin for the game-winning 2-yard touchdown with 13 seconds remaining.
