Former Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon. The news came after the team’s first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, where Aguayo missed both a field goal and an extra point.

Aguayo had struggled to find his footing in the NFL. After being selected unusually high in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, he only connected on 71 percent of his field goal attempts in his first year in the league, which ranked 31st or last among qualified kickers. Warning signs appeared when the Buccaneers brought in veteran kicker Nick Folk to challenge for the starting spot.

The NFL collapse is shocking for those who watched Aguayo throughout his time at Florida State. He was a 3-time All-American and 2013 Lou Groza Award recipient, which is given to the best kicker in the nation.

In his three years in Tallahassee (2013-2015), Aguayo never made below 80 percent of his field goals. He never missed an extra point attempt either. His 95.5 percent mark in 2013 is still good for the top place among FSU kickers.
