The Daily Nole — June 30, 2017: Powers Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Lead Story

Former FSU softball first baseman Alex Powers has been known for her prowess on the field, but the 2016 ACC Player of the Year made noise Thursday for what she has accomplished in the classroom.

Powers was named the ACC’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Powers is working on acquiring her masters’ in sports management and was a 4-time ACC champion on the field.

After being the conference’s player of the year in 2016, Powers hit .360 as a senior with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs en route to being named first-team All-ACC. Powers’ biggest moment may have come on May 3 when she hit a walk-off 2-run home run to beat Florida in 11 innings.

In addition to Powers, Sydney Broderick, Ellie Cooper, Meghan King, Morgan Klaevemann, Dani Morgan and Anna Shelnutt all earned All-ACC academic honors. The seven selections for FSU was more than any other school.

4-star guard Morgan Jones, a 2018 women’s basketball prospect, has committed to FSU.

FSU finished 13th in the Directors’ Cup standings.

Sports Illustrated has listed FSU safety Derwin James as its top player in the country for 2017.
