Commitment Analysis: Hamsah Nasirildeen

The Florida State recruiting train kept rolling along over the weekend as head coach Jimbo Fisher and company were able to flip one of South Carolina’s top commitments in safety Hamsah Nasirildeen. Nasirildeen is listed as a 6-3 and 210-pound prospect.

Nasirildeen gives FSU two safeties for 2017, joining Daytona Beach product Cyrus Fagan, who has enrolled early. Nasirildeen is the No. 111 overall prospect, according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings, and the top player from North Carolina. Here’s what he’ll bring and how he’ll fit with the Seminoles:

What he brings: Nasirildeen for the most part is the quintessential hard-hitting, run-stopping safety. Nasirildeen has good instincts and is extremely aggressive. He’s a tough kid who already has an FBS body.

Nasirildeen is a good athlete that will certainly be a strong safety at the FBS level. With a few more pounds, Nasirildeen could fill in as a linebacker in certain packages if he needed to. Nasirildeen has decent ball skills, but is still relatively raw in pass coverage.

How he fits: Fagan enrolling early will give him a leg up on Nasirildeen. Nasirildeen will also have a plethora of players returning in front of him at the position like Derwin James, Ermon Lane, Trey Marshall, A.J. Westbrook, Calvin Brewton, Carlos Becker (who has also played cornerback) and possibly Nate Andrews.

It’s unlikely that Nasirildeen does much defensively in 2017, but would be a perfect player to help cover kicks and punts. Assuming Andrews gets a medical redshirt and returns however, four players are likely to be gone following the season. Andrews, Lane and Marshall will all be seniors and James, if he can return to form, will be a shoo-in to go in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Getting used to playing in pass coverage will be Nasirildeen’s biggest challenge, but expect him to have a significant role on the defense by 2018 if not a starting one.
